Jazz Conversations
"Jazz Conversations" evolved out of discussions with drummer, Steve Mitchell and bookstore owner, Murrie Zlotziver. Steve was initially introduced to me by a mutual friend when I first took over Page after page the local independent bookstore. There was an instant camaraderie established between us, perhaps it was due to our interest in music especially jazz or the fact that we both had spent considerable parts of our lives in the SF Bay area.
Steve wanted to preserve jazz and educate individuals about the importance of the genre as America's music. With that in mind, I created, produced and sponsored "Jazz Conversations" with Burgess, Mitchell and Seal. Greg Burgess actually coined the phrase "Jazz Conversations".
What developed was a series of eight conversations, Cool Jazz, Great American Jazz Songbook, Swing, Bebop, Latin, Hard Bop, Experimental and Holiday Jazz. Each addressed the composers, lyricists, style, vocalists and musicians that made the genre famous. My favorite part was the jam sessions at the end; where members of the audience were asked to join the trio in the final tune.
Individuals would come up to scat, play trombone, sax, guitar or a variety of percussion instruments with the band.
'Jazz Conversations" are meant to educate but above all to entertain.
